Recap, July 29 - August 2

So long July, hello August! Normally we wouldn’t be so excited for yet ANOTHER month of Summer, but August signals the beginning of the end. Out with Air Conditioning and Popsicles, in with Jack O’ Lanterns and Haunted Houses. This week again hasn’t had much in the way of news, but there certainly were some highlights worth mentioning like…

Free Games are heading to Nintendo Switch!

Well…sorta. Listen, if you’re like us, any Switch news is good news. We’re huge fans of the portable home console and have been from the get-go. The only thing we haven’t been so crazy about has been the online functionality, something we’re certainly not alone in thinking. However, we found out this week that the tides may be turning in our favor. Nintendo announced that to sweeten the deal, every month they will be releasing a full game from their library that will be playable for one week, and offering that game at a 30% discount in case you like it and want to play more after the trial period is up. The cynic in me knows that this is nothing more than a marketing ploy for Nintendo to sell more games, but I don’t give two shits about that. They’re a business, and they’re gonna do what’s necessary to keep their heads above water. What I’m excited for (and you should be too) is the opportunity to play a game for free that I might be on the fence about, and to buy it at a fairly considerable discount if I end up liking it. If I don’t like the game? I’ll just delete it off my console, no harm, no foul.

This month you can download and play Mario Tennis Aces between August 7 - 13th, and the discount will be available until August 20th!

zombieland 2 trailer!

It’s been over a week since the trailer dropped at this point, but this is our first opportunity to talk about the Zombieland sequel, so nut up or shut up. It’s been ten long years since the original movie came out, and I can’t help feeling like they might’ve sat on this follow up a bit too long. Yes, I am well aware that Amazon made a pilot for a TV series a few years back, but that was hot garbage and destined to fail from the beginning. The real reason I’m conflicted on this movie is certainly not because of it’s quality. If anything, this looks to be a really well done part two. Maybe even the best part two since Shrek 2, and let me tell you, that’s high praise. The reason I’m wary on this movie is because the first movie hit me at the perfect time in my life. I was in ninth grade and in full swing into my horror obsession. My friends and I snuck into this movie because our parents wouldn’t buy us tickets, and believe it or not, Zombieland made a huge impression on me. The blend of comedy and horror worked so well for me (I hadn’t seen Shaun of the Dead at this point) that I used my birthday money that year to buy the DVD and watched it every weekend for months. I’d really like to believe that this new movie will pair with the original like a fine wine to a fine cheese, but I’ve been burned by more than my fair share of “too many years later” comedy sequels to be fully trusting at this point. I suppose only time will tell!

Y’all seem to be sleeping on this New Invader Zim Joint

I’ve heard a lot from people that are super excited for Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling, and rightfully so since it looks absolutely excellent. Rocko’s Modern Life was, of course, a standout cartoon in an era where most cartoons were already rather impressive. What surprises me, however, is how few people have been talking about Invader Zim: Enter The Florpus which is coming out just a week later. Invader Zim, like Rocko, really stood out amongst its peers at the time. It was definitely a favorite of everyone in my friend group, and yet somehow due to network incompetence and the high cost of producing episodes of the 2D/3D hybrid it was cancelled after 3 seasons. The build up to the show’s cancellation is kinda fascinating to me, so perhaps I’ll write about it at some point. Back to Enter the Florpus though, I want to say it was around this time last year that we were treated to the 2 minute teaser, so of course imagine my surprise when this year, just weeks before the release, we were treated to… 40 seconds of Zim and Gir hiding in a toilet and cackling like mad. Let me just say, August is shaping up to be a hell of a month for fans of 90s and early 00s cartoons, and if you’re hyped for Static Cling, It might be in your best interest to try getting some hype on for this as well.

…yeah, no shit.

Well, that’s really it for news this week. Like we said, we’re still kind of in the post Comic Con purgatory that comes about every year around this time. Hopefully with the Halloween season on it’s way, we’ll have a lot more to talk about very soon. In the meantime, keep your eyes peeled for our exclusive interview with the one and only @calkearns! Have a great weekend and we’ll catch you back here next week!
